Planting a little herb garden is a great way to connect with nature, no matter how urban your environment. It’s a perfect weekend project: Herbs are easy to grow and they taste delicious, and indoor plants can add a vibrant pop of color to any living space.

Herbs such as basil, parsley, mint, and oregano have many uses in the kitchen and thrive in warm, sunny spots. Or if you love both tea and gardening, consider growing chamomile, lavender, or peppermint, whose leaves you can dry for herbal-infused teas. Fragrant rosemary, lavender, and sage, meanwhile, have excellent uses in natural hair and skincare products.

You can plant your herbs in traditional clay flower pots, or you can get creative, like in this photo from The Inspired Room, and plant them in whimsical coffee cups. We’ve also seen hanging herb gardens and cute herb garden ladders that would look great in any kitchen!

What you’ll need:

  • Herb plant

  • Organic soil

  • Organic fertilizer

  • 8”-16” container

  • Small shovel

  • Small rocks

Directions:

  1. The container. An 8-inch pot works great for a single plant; 16 inches or larger is best for multiple plants. The pot can be clay or plastic, but ideally it should have a hole in the bottom for drainage.

  2. Drainage. Place a 1-inch layer of small rocks in the bottom of your container. This will ensure water is properly moving through the soil, preventing the perpetually-wet roots that can cause root rot and other problems.

  3. Soil. Add some organic potting soil, filling the container about halfway up.

  4. Planting. Gently tip the herb plant out of its original container. Place it in your prepared pot and fill in the remaining space with soil.

  5. Fertilize. Add your favorite herb-friendly organic fertilizer to give your plant a boost, following the product instructions.

  6. Water and Sun. Give your new plant a healthy dose of water, enough to moisten the soil all the way through. Find a sunny spot inside or outside (depending on your climate!) and follow your herb’s planting directions to know how much sun and water it prefers.

  7. Harvesting. When your plant has grown a little, you’ll be able to pinch some leaves to enjoy in your favorite recipe.
