FAQ

Why do we use probiotics?

Probiotics are friendly microorganisms that provide health benefits when consumed or, in the case of beauty, applied topically on the skin. When you apply probiotics topically, they act like a physical barrier to the harmful microbes that cause inflammation or infection. Applying probiotics directly to the skin also facilitates the production of antimicrobial peptides, which act like natural antibiotics to fend off harmful bacteria. Ultimately, Carmel Naturals deodorant harnesses the beneficial power of probiotics to fight the bacteria that cause body odor, while simultaneously soothing and protecting your underarms.

Why don’t we use parabens?

Parabens are a common group of preservatives that have been used in beauty products since the 1930s. They prolong the shelf life of many health and cosmetic products by preventing the growth of mold and bacteria within them.

However, when you use products that contain parabens, they can also enter your body through your skin. A recent British study (Darbre 2004) found that parabens can penetrate the skin and remain within breast tissue long-term, thus increasing the risk of breast cancer. Parabens are also believed to disrupt normal endocrine function by mimicking estrogen, a hormone that plays a large part in breast cancer formation (Byford 2002, Kim 2011, Vo 2011). Other scientific studies suggest that parabens can harm fertility and reproductive organs, affect birth outcomes, and cause skin irritation (Smith 2013, Nishihama 2016, Geer 2017, Vo 2010, Zhang 2014).

But parabens aren’t just bad for human health — they are linked to environmental harm, too. In 2017, the World Health Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme officially classified parabens as hormone-disrupting chemical compounds that threaten environmental and wildlife health.

Carmel Naturals is committed to providing you with skincare products that are truly safe, which is why you’ll never find parabens in our deodorant.

What are your ingredients?

Carmel Naturals deodorant is comprised of organic coconut oil, kokum butter, organic beeswax, arrow root powder, baking soda, vitamin E oil, probiotics (room temperature stable), and essential oils (sweet orange, rosemary, peppermint, tea tree, and lemon). You can learn more about each of our ingredients and their functions on our Ingredients page.

Do you sell fragrance-free deodorant?

Not yet. The fragrance found in Carmel Naturals deodorant comes from essential oils, which help to counteract bacteria and support a healthy underarm microbiome. However, we are currently developing a fragrance-free formula. In the meantime, please send special requests to exclude essential oils via the form below.

What is your return policy?

If you are dissatisfied with our deodorant, you may send back your order and receive a full refund.
